〜を皮切りに

Marks the first event in a series after which similar things continue or spread energetically. The following clause must describe expansion or continuation (tours, openings, a chain of protests), so it is not used for an ordinary one-off start or for negative chains of misfortune in neutral speech. Formal, common in news reports and announcements.

• 東京公演を皮切りに、全国ツアーが始まる。

  とうきょうこうえんをかわきりに、ぜんこくツアーがはじまる。

  Starting with the Tokyo performance, the nationwide tour begins.

• この店を皮切りに、海外にも支店を出す予定だ。

  このみせをかわきりに、かいがいにもしてんをだすよていだ。

  Starting with this shop, we plan to open branches overseas as well.

• 社長の発言を皮切りとして、次々に意見が出された。

  しゃちょうのはつげんをかわきりとして、つぎつぎにいけんがだされた。

  Beginning with the president's remark, opinions came out one after another.
