〜にもまして

Used to say that the present state surpasses a previous standard of comparison: 以前にもまして (even more than before), 去年にもまして. With question words it makes a superlative: 何にもまして (more than anything), 誰にもまして. It is a formal, written-style equivalent of 〜より（もっと）, and unlike a plain comparison it implies that the thing compared was already at a high level.

• 今年の夏は去年にもまして暑い。

  ことしのなつはきょねんにもましてあつい。

  This summer is even hotter than last year's.

• 家族の健康が何にもまして大切だ。

  かぞくのけんこうがなににもましてたいせつだ。

  My family's health matters more than anything else.

• 彼は以前にもまして熱心に研究に取り組んでいる。

  かれはいぜんにもましてねっしんにけんきゅうにとりくんでいる。

  He is working on his research even more eagerly than before.
