〜の至り

A very formal, set expression used in speeches, ceremonies and written greetings to express the speaker's own strong feeling, typically 光栄の至り (deeply honored), 感激の至り, or 赤面の至り. It combines only with a limited set of Sino-Japanese nouns; you cannot freely attach it to any noun. 若気の至り ("the folly of youth") is a fixed idiom meaning something done rashly when young.

  このような しょうを いただき、こうえいの いたりです。

  I am deeply honored to receive such an award.

• 皆様にお集まりいただき、感激の至りでございます。

  みなさまに おあつまりいただき、かんげきの いたりで ございます。

  I am profoundly moved that you have all gathered here.

• 学生時代の失敗は若気の至りとして許してほしい。

  がくせいじだいの しっぱいは わかげの いたりとして ゆるしてほしい。

  I hope you'll forgive my student-day blunders as youthful folly.
