〜なくして（は）〜ない

A formal, written equivalent of 〜がなければ〜ない, stressing that something is an indispensable condition. It is common in essays, speeches and editorials, and often follows abstract nouns such as 努力, 協力, 支援, 犠牲. The second clause must be negative or express impossibility; the version with は is more emphatic.

• 努力なくして成功はない。

  どりょくなくしてせいこうはない。

  There is no success without effort.

• 皆様のご支援なくしては、この事業は実現できませんでした。

  みなさまのごしえんなくしては、このじぎょうはじつげんできませんでした。

  Without your support, this project could never have been realized.

• 相互の信頼なくして、真の平和は築けない。

  そうごのしんらいなくして、しんのへいわはきずけない。

  True peace cannot be built without mutual trust.
