〜の（所有・修飾）

の links two nouns: N1 describes or owns N2. It covers possession (私の本), affiliation (大学の先生), material/content (日本語の本), and place (東京の友だち). The order is the opposite of English "of": 日本の車 = a car of Japan. When the second noun is obvious it can be dropped: 「これは私のです」= this is mine.

• これは私のかばんです。

  これはわたしのかばんです。

  This is my bag.

• 山田さんは日本語の先生です。

  やまださんはにほんごのせんせいです。

  Mr. Yamada is a Japanese language teacher.

• その赤い傘は姉のです。

  そのあかいかさはあねのです。

  That red umbrella is my sister's.
