〜はおろか〜まで

Puts an obvious, easier case first with はおろか and then adds a more surprising, extreme case with まで／さえ／すら to heighten the effect. The whole sentence usually carries a negative or unexpected tone—something lacking, impossible, or worse than imagined—and the speaker's feeling of astonishment or dismay. It is a written, formal expression; note that it cannot be used to make a request or express intention, unlike 〜どころか, which more often reverses the listener's expectation directly.

• 彼は漢字はおろか、ひらがなまで書けない。

  かれはかんじはおろか、ひらがなまでかけない。

  He can't write kanji, let alone even hiragana.

• その村には病院はおろか、診療所まで一つもない。

  そのむらにはびょういんはおろか、しんりょうじょまでひとつもない。

  That village has no hospital, and not even a single clinic.

• 事故で彼は全財産はおろか、家族の信頼までも失ってしまった。

  じこでかれはぜんざいさんはおろか、かぞくのしんらいまでもうしなってしまった。

  In the accident he lost all his property, and even his family's trust.
