〜ずじまい

Says that something the speaker intended or hoped to do was never carried out before the chance was gone, almost always with a tinge of regret or disappointment. It is usually followed by だ／に終わる／になる and often preceded by 結局 or とうとう. Note the irregular せずじまい for する, and remember it is not used for things one simply chose not to do without any feeling about it; compare 〜ないままだ, which merely states a continuing unchanged state.

• 忙しくて、結局その本は読まずじまいだった。

  いそがしくて、けっきょくそのほんはよまずじまいだった。

  I was busy, and in the end I never got around to reading that book.

• 探し物はとうとう見つからずじまいだった。

  さがしものはとうとうみつからずじまいだった。

  In the end I never did find what I was looking for.

• お世話になったのに、お礼も言えずじまいで彼は帰国してしまった。

  おせわになったのに、おれいもいえずじまいでかれはきこくしてしまった。

  He did so much for me, yet he went home without my ever having thanked him.
