〜って（引用・話題）

って is the casual spoken form of と (quotation) and of は／というのは (topic). In the quoting use it replaces と言う・と聞く, and the verb is often dropped: 「明日来るって（言ってた）」. In the topic use it introduces a word or idea to define or comment on: 「日本語って難しいね」. It belongs to everyday conversation and casual messages; in writing or formal speech use と／と言っていました／は instead. Note that after a noun, って can be either quotation or topic, so context decides.

• 田中さん、今日は来ないって。

  たなかさん、きょうはこないって。

  Tanaka says he isn't coming today.

• 一人暮らしって、思ったより大変だね。

  ひとりぐらしって、おもったよりたいへんだね。

  Living alone is harder than I expected, isn't it?

• 駅前に新しいカフェができたって聞いたけど、行った？

  えきまえにあたらしいカフェができたってきいたけど、いった？

  I heard a new café opened in front of the station — have you been?
