〜に（存在の場所）

に marks the place where a person or thing exists, used with あります (things), います (people/animals), 住んでいます, 座っている and similar state verbs. Compare で, which marks the place where an action happens: 「教室にいます」(I am in the classroom) vs 「教室で勉強します」(I study in the classroom). A common mistake is 「教室でいます」, which is wrong.

• 部屋にテレビがあります。

  へやにテレビがあります。

  There is a TV in the room.

• 母は今、台所にいます。

  はははいま、だいどころにいます。

  My mother is in the kitchen now.

• 私は大阪に住んでいます。

  わたしはおおさかにすんでいます。

  I live in Osaka.
