〜ね／〜よ

ね seeks agreement or confirmation from the listener, or shares a feeling the speaker assumes both people have. よ tells the listener something new, or emphasises the speaker's opinion or warning. Using よ with information the listener obviously already knows can sound pushy, and leaving out ね in small talk can sound cold. They are mainly spoken; the combination よね softens よ by inviting confirmation.

• 今日は暑いですね。

  きょうはあついですね。

  It's hot today, isn't it?

• あ、財布が落ちましたよ。

  あ、さいふがおちましたよ。

  Oh, you dropped your wallet.

• この店のケーキ、おいしいですよね。

  このみせのけーき、おいしいですよね。

  The cake at this shop is delicious, don't you think?
