〜じゃありません／〜ではありません

This is the polite negative of ～です, used with nouns and な-adjectives (never with い-adjectives, which take ～くないです). ではありません is the more formal, written or public-announcement form; じゃありません is the everyday spoken form. In casual conversation many speakers say じゃないです, which is equally polite but softer than じゃありません.

• 私は学生じゃありません。

  わたしはがくせいじゃありません。

  I am not a student.

• この部屋はきれいではありません。

  このへやはきれいではありません。

  This room is not clean.

• すみません、これは私のかばんじゃありません。

  すみません、これはわたしのかばんじゃありません。

  Excuse me, this is not my bag.
