〜でした

でした is the polite past of です and attaches to nouns and な-adjectives to describe a past state. い-adjectives do not take でした; they change to ～かったです (×寒いでした → ○寒かったです). The negative past is じゃありませんでした or the more formal ではありませんでした.

• 昨日は休みでした。

  きのうはやすみでした。

  Yesterday was a day off.

• 子どものとき、体が弱かったです。今は元気でした…いいえ、元気です。

  こどものとき、からだがよわかったです。いまはげんきでした…いいえ、げんきです。

  As a child I was weak. Now I'm healthy.

• テストは難しくて、あまり簡単ではありませんでした。

  てすとはむずかしくて、あまりかんたんではありませんでした。

  The test was hard; it wasn't easy at all.
