〜てから

てから marks the first action as clearly finished before the second one starts, stressing the order. It is stronger than simply joining clauses with ～て, which only lists actions in sequence. Only the final verb carries the tense, and normally you use it once per sentence rather than chaining many てから clauses.

• 手を洗ってから、ご飯を食べます。

  てをあらってから、ごはんをたべます。

  I eat after washing my hands.

• 仕事が終わってから、友だちに会いました。

  しごとがおわってから、ともだちにあいました。

  After work finished, I met a friend.

• 日本へ来てから、毎日日本語を話しています。

  にほんへきてから、まいにちにほんごをはなしています。

  Ever since I came to Japan, I've been speaking Japanese every day.
