〜は〜が〜です

A double-subject sentence: は marks the overall topic and が marks the specific part or aspect being described. It is the normal way to describe a feature of something (日本は物価が高いです) or to state likes and abilities with 好き・上手・ある. Learners often wrongly use を with 好き or 上手; these adjectives require が.

• 象は鼻が長いです。

  ぞうははながながいです。

  Elephants have long trunks.

• 私はスポーツが好きです。

  わたしはスポーツがすきです。

  I like sports.

• この町は空気がきれいです。

  このまちはくうきがきれいです。

  The air in this town is clean.
