〜がわかります／できます

Both verbs take が, not を, for the thing understood or the ability. わかります means to understand or know something (a language, a meaning, a reason); できます means to be able to do something or that something is possible/ready. With activity nouns like 運転・料理・テニス you can say 〜ができます, and with V-る + ことができます for verbs. A common mistake is saying 日本語をわかります instead of 日本語がわかります.

• わたしは英語が少しわかります。

  わたしはえいごがすこしわかります。

  I understand a little English.

• 弟は車の運転ができます。

  おとうとはくるまのうんてんができます。

  My little brother can drive a car.

• この漢字の読み方がわかりませんから、教えてください。

  このかんじのよみかたがわかりませんから、おしえてください。

  I don't know how to read this kanji, so please teach me.
