〜のが好きです／上手です

の turns a verb into a noun so it can be the object of 好き・上手・下手・きらい, which all take が. Use the dictionary form before の (読むのが好きです, not 読みますのが). With nouns, no の is needed: 音楽が好きです. Remember that 上手です is normally used about other people; about yourself prefer 得意です or a modest expression.

• わたしは本を読むのが好きです。

  わたしはほんをよむのがすきです。

  I like reading books.

• 田中さんは歌を歌うのが上手ですね。

  たなかさんはうたをうたうのがじょうずですね。

  Tanaka-san is good at singing, isn't he?

• わたしは朝早く起きるのが下手です。

  わたしはあさはやくおきるのがへたです。

  I'm bad at getting up early in the morning.
