数量＋ぐらい／ごろ

ぐらい（also くらい）attaches to quantities — amounts, numbers of people, lengths of time — to say 'about that much'. ごろ attaches to a point in time (a clock time, a month, a year) to say 'around then'. A common mistake is mixing them up: 三時ごろ means 'around 3 o'clock', but 三時間ぐらい means 'about three hours'. Both are used freely in everyday speech and in writing.

• 毎日一時間ぐらい歩きます。

  まいにちいちじかんぐらいあるきます。

  I walk for about an hour every day.

• 七時ごろうちへ帰ります。

  しちじごろうちへかえります。

  I go home around seven o'clock.

• パーティーに二十人ぐらい来ました。

  パーティーににじゅうにんぐらいきました。

  About twenty people came to the party.
