〜そうです（伝聞）

Reports information the speaker got from someone else, the news, a book, etc., without adding his own judgment. The source is often shown with 〜によると / 〜の話では. Unlike the 様態 そうだ, it connects to the plain form and never conjugates (no そうでした, no そうじゃない). Compared with 〜らしい, 伝聞 そうだ transmits the information more directly and neutrally.

• 天気予報によると、明日は雪が降るそうです。

  てんきよほうによると、あしたはゆきがふるそうです。

  According to the weather forecast, it will snow tomorrow.

• 山田さんは来月結婚するそうです。

  やまださんはらいげつけっこんするそうです。

  I hear Ms. Yamada is getting married next month.

• 友だちの話では、あの映画はとても怖かったそうだ。

  ともだちのはなしでは、あのえいがはとてもこわかったそうだ。

  According to my friend, that movie was really scary.
