〜らしい

Used when the speaker bases a judgment on information from outside — hearsay, rumours, things read or overheard — and does not take full responsibility for it. It is softer and vaguer than 伝聞 そうだ and slightly more distant than ようだ. There is also a different 「N + らしい」 meaning 'typical of, befitting' (男らしい, 春らしい天気), which is a separate usage.

• となりの人は引っ越すらしいです。

  となりのひとはひっこすらしいです。

  Apparently the person next door is moving out.

• あの店のラーメンはかなり辛いらしいよ。

  あのみせのラーメンはかなりからいらしいよ。

  I hear the ramen at that place is pretty spicy.

• 課長は今日、会社を休んでいるらしい。病気らしい。

  かちょうはきょう、かいしゃをやすんでいるらしい。びょうきらしい。

  The section chief is apparently off work today. It seems he's ill.
