〜はずがない

Strongly denies a possibility on the basis of what the speaker knows: 'judging from the facts, that can't be true'. It is stronger than 〜ないかもしれない and more reasoned than the simple negative. In casual speech はずがない often becomes はずない; 〜わけがない has a very similar meaning and is also common in conversation.

• あの人がうそをつくはずがない。

  あのひとがうそをつくはずがない。

  There's no way that person would lie.

• こんなに難しい問題、子どもに分かるはずがありません。

  こんなにむずかしいもんだい、こどもにわかるはずがありません。

  A child couldn't possibly understand such a difficult problem.

• 彼は昨日から出張だから、ここにいるはずないよ。

  かれはきのうからしゅっちょうだから、ここにいるはずないよ。

  He's been away on business since yesterday, so he can't be here.
