〜つもりだ

States the speaker's own settled intention, usually decided before the moment of speaking. For the negative, both 行かないつもりだ ('I intend not to go') and 行くつもりはない ('I have no intention of going', stronger) exist. Avoid using it directly about a superior's plans (〜おつもりですか is possible but formal); and unlike 〜(よ)うと思う, つもりだ sounds like a firmer, already-made decision.

• 夏休みに国へ帰るつもりです。

  なつやすみにくにへかえるつもりです。

  I plan to go back to my country during summer vacation.

• 今日はお酒を飲まないつもりだ。

  きょうはおさけをのまないつもりだ。

  I don't intend to drink today.

• 来年、日本語の試験を受けるつもりで勉強しています。

  らいねん、にほんごのしけんをうけるつもりでべんきょうしています。

  I'm studying with the intention of taking the Japanese exam next year.
