〜のに

Connects two real facts that clash, and adds the speaker's surprise, complaint, regret or disappointment. Because of this emotional colour it cannot be followed by a command, request or invitation in the main clause — use 〜が or 〜けど for a neutral 'but'. It can also end a sentence softly to voice a grumble: せっかく作ったのに…

• 薬を飲んだのに、まだ熱があります。

  くすりをのんだのに、まだねつがあります。

  Even though I took the medicine, I still have a fever.

• 日曜日なのに、работaしなければなりません。

  にちようびなのに、はたらかなければなりません。

  Even though it's Sunday, I have to work.

• せっかく作ったのに、誰も食べてくれなかった。

  せっかくつくったのに、だれもたべてくれなかった。

  I went to the trouble of cooking, but nobody ate it.
