〜ために（目的）

Used to state the purpose of an action; the verb before ために must be volitional (something the subject controls), and the subject of both clauses is normally the same. It is slightly more formal than 〜ように and common in writing and speeches. Compare 〜ように, which takes non-volitional verbs or potential forms (見えるように, 忘れないように); saying 日本語が上手になるために is unnatural — use ように there.

• 健康のために、毎朝歩いています。

  けんこうのために、まいあさあるいています。

  I walk every morning for my health.

• 車を買うために、お金をためています。

  くるまをかうために、おかねをためています。

  I'm saving money in order to buy a car.

• 子どもの将来のために、いい学校を探しています。

  こどものしょうらいのために、いいがっこうをさがしています。

  We're looking for a good school for our child's future.
