〜すぎる

Expresses that something goes beyond the proper or desirable degree, so it usually carries a negative evaluation. It conjugates as a group 2 verb (すぎた, すぎて, すぎない). Note the irregular forms よすぎる (from いい) and ないすぎる→なさすぎる; also remember that unlike とても, すぎる is not simple praise — 美しすぎる can sound like a complaint or an exaggeration.

• このスープは辛すぎます。

  このスープはからすぎます。

  This soup is too spicy.

• ゆうべ飲みすぎて、頭が痛いです。

  ゆうべのみすぎて、あたまがいたいです。

  I drank too much last night and now I have a headache.

• この町は静かすぎて、ちょっとさびしいです。

  このまちはしずかすぎて、ちょっとさびしいです。

  This town is too quiet, so it feels a bit lonely.
