〜てしまう

Two nuances: completing an action thoroughly (全部食べてしまった) and regret that something unintended happened (財布を落としてしまった). Context and intonation decide which. Casual contractions are 〜ちゃう／〜じゃう (忘れちゃった, 飲んじゃった), very common in speech; the full form is safer in writing.

• ケーキを全部食べてしまいました。

  ケーキをぜんぶたべてしまいました。

  I ate up the whole cake.

• 電車の中にかさを忘れてしまった。

  でんしゃのなかにかさをわすれてしまった。

  I went and left my umbrella on the train.

• 急がないと、店が閉まっちゃうよ。

  いそがないと、みせがしまっちゃうよ。

  If we don't hurry, the shop will close on us.
