〜てくる／〜ていく

〜てくる shows an action or change moving toward the speaker or continuing up to the present, while 〜ていく shows movement away from the speaker or a change continuing into the future. With verbs of motion it is literal (買ってくる = go buy and come back), with change verbs it is temporal (増えてきた／増えていく). A common pitfall is mixing the time direction: use 〜てきた for the past-to-now stretch and 〜ていく for now-to-future.

• ちょっとパンを買ってきます。

  ちょっとぱんをかってきます。

  I'll just go buy some bread (and come back).

• 日本語が だんだん 分かってきました。

  にほんごが だんだん わかってきました。

  I've gradually come to understand Japanese.

• これからも日本語の勉強を続けていきたいです。

  これからもにほんごのべんきょうをつづけていきたいです。

  I want to keep on studying Japanese from now on.
