〜ほど〜ない

Used to compare two things and say that A does not reach the level of B; B is the standard, and B is the higher one. 「AはBほど〜ない」 is a softer, more natural way of comparing than 「BはAより〜」 when you want to keep B as the topic of comparison. Note the predicate must be negative; you cannot say 「AはBほど高いです」.

• 今日は昨日ほど寒くないですね。

  きょうはきのうほどさむくないですね。

  Today isn't as cold as yesterday, is it?

• わたしの部屋は兄の部屋ほど広くありません。

  わたしのへやはあにのへやほどひろくありません。

  My room is not as big as my older brother's.

• 日本語を話すのは、思っていたほど難しくなかった。

  にほんごをはなすのは、おもっていたほどむずかしくなかった。

  Speaking Japanese wasn't as hard as I had thought.
