〜かどうか

Turns a yes/no question into a noun clause inside a bigger sentence, used with verbs like 分かる, 知らない, 調べる, 心配する, 確かめる. With な-adjectives and nouns the だ is dropped (元気かどうか, 学生かどうか). When the embedded question contains a question word, use 疑問詞＋か instead, not かどうか.

• あした雨が降るかどうか分かりません。

  あしたあめがふるかどうかわかりません。

  I don't know whether it will rain tomorrow.

• この料理がおいしいかどうか、食べてみてください。

  このりょうりがおいしいかどうか、たべてみてください。

  Please try it and see whether this dish tastes good.

• 彼が本当に医者かどうか、確かめたほうがいいですよ。

  かれがほんとうにいしゃかどうか、たしかめたほうがいいですよ。

  You'd better check whether he's really a doctor.
