〜たまま

Shows that a state resulting from an action continues unchanged while something else happens, often with the nuance that this is careless or unusual (電気をつけたまま寝る). It attaches to the た-form of verbs, or to a noun with の (昔のまま). The negative form is 〜ないまま ('without having done'). Unlike 〜ながら, which joins two simultaneous actions, まま describes an unchanged state.

• 窓を開けたまま寝てしまいました。

  まどをあけたままねてしまいました。

  I fell asleep with the window left open.

• 靴をはいたまま入らないでください。

  くつをはいたままはいらないでください。

  Please don't come in with your shoes on.

• 彼は何も言わないまま、部屋を出て行った。

  かれはなにもいわないまま、へやをでていった。

  He left the room without saying anything.
