〜ことになっている

States a rule, schedule, custom or agreement that is already in place and applies regardless of the speaker's own will. Often used for school or company regulations, laws and fixed plans. Compare 〜ことにしている, which expresses a personal habit the speaker decided on.

• ここでは靴を脱ぐことになっています。

  ここでは くつを ぬぐ ことに なって います。

  You're supposed to take off your shoes here.

• 会議は毎週月曜日に行われることになっている。

  かいぎは まいしゅう げつようびに おこなわれる ことに なって いる。

  The meeting is scheduled to be held every Monday.

• 寮では夜十一時以降、外出してはいけないことになっている。

  りょうでは よる じゅういちじ いこう、がいしゅつ しては いけない ことに なって いる。

  In the dormitory, the rule is that you may not go out after eleven at night.
