〜ものの

A written, somewhat formal concessive: the first clause is acknowledged as true, but the result is different from what one would expect. It is close to 〜けれども/〜が but more literary, so it is rare in casual conversation. The second clause usually describes a state or fact, not a command or invitation.

• 引き受けたものの、自信がない。

  ひきうけた ものの、じしんが ない。

  I took the job on, but I have no confidence.

• 免許は取ったものの、まだ一度も運転していない。

  めんきょは とった ものの、まだ いちども うんてん して いない。

  Although I got my licence, I haven't driven even once yet.

• この機械は便利なものの、値段が高すぎる。

  この きかいは べんりな ものの、ねだんが たかすぎる。

  This machine is convenient, but it is far too expensive.
