〜によって／〜により

This is a versatile pattern with several related uses: means/method (「話し合いによって決める」), cause/reason (「事故により電車が遅れた」), the agent of a passive sentence (「ピカソによって描かれた絵」), and variation (「人によって考え方が違う」). 〜により is the stiffer written or announcement form, common in notices and news; 〜によって is neutral. When it marks variation, 〜によっては ("depending on the case, in some cases") is often used. Note it attaches only to nouns, never directly to verbs.

• 国によって習慣が違います。

  くにによってしゅうかんがちがいます。

  Customs differ from country to country.

• 事故により、電車が三十分遅れています。

  じこにより、でんしゃがさんじゅっぷんおくれています。

  Due to an accident, the train is running thirty minutes late.

• この問題は話し合いによって解決するしかない。

  このもんだいははなしあいによってかいけつするしかない。

  There is no way to solve this problem other than through discussion.
