〜として

〜として states the position, role, qualification or category in which someone or something acts or is regarded. It is used in both writing and speech and is common in formal self-introductions and explanations. 〜としては adds the speaker's standpoint ("speaking as ~"), and 〜としても means "even as ~". Do not confuse it with 〜にとって, which marks the person from whose viewpoint something is judged, not a role.

• 私は留学生として日本に来ました。

  わたしはりゅうがくせいとしてにほんにきました。

  I came to Japan as an exchange student.

• 彼は医者としてだけでなく、作家としても有名だ。

  かれはいしゃとしてだけでなく、さっかとしてもゆうめいだ。

  He is famous not only as a doctor but also as a writer.

• この部屋は現在、倉庫として使われている。

  このへやはげんざい、そうことしてつかわれている。

  This room is currently used as a storeroom.
