〜によると／〜によれば

This marks the source of hearsay information: news, weather reports, rumours, or what someone told you. The sentence normally ends with a reporting expression such as 〜そうだ, 〜らしい, 〜ということだ or 〜とのことだ; leaving it out sounds incomplete. 〜によれば is slightly more formal/written than 〜によると. Only nouns that can be an information source (天気予報, 新聞, 先生の話) fit here.

• 天気予報によると、明日は雪が降るそうです。

  てんきよほうによると、あしたはゆきがふるそうです。

  According to the weather forecast, it will snow tomorrow.

• 友達の話によると、あの店はもう閉まったらしい。

  ともだちのはなしによると、あのみせはもうしまったらしい。

  According to my friend, that shop has already closed down.

• 新聞によれば、今年の夏は例年より暑くなるということだ。

  しんぶんによれば、ことしのなつはれいねんよりあつくなるということだ。

  According to the newspaper, this summer will be hotter than usual.
