〜としたら／〜とすれば

This sets up a hypothesis and then asks or states what would follow: "supposing X is true, then ~". The second clause usually contains judgement, opinion, a question, or a volitional/probable form, not a plain statement of fact. It is more analytical than 〜たら and is common in discussion and writing; 〜とすれば is slightly more formal, and 〜としたら is used freely in speech. 〜とすると is a near-synonym.

• 留学するとしたら、どこの国へ行きたいですか。

  りゅうがくするとしたら、どこのくにへいきたいですか。

  If you were to study abroad, which country would you want to go to?

• この話が本当だとすれば、大変なことになる。

  このはなしがほんとうだとすれば、たいへんなことになる。

  If this story is true, things are going to get serious.

• 車で行くとしたら、три…

  くるまでいくとしたら、さんじかんはかかるだろう。

  Supposing we go by car, it will probably take three hours.
