〜とおり（に）

This says an action is done, or a result turns out, exactly in the way indicated: as instructed, as expected, as written. V-る + とおりに looks forward to what is about to be shown or said, while V-た + とおりに refers to what has already been done or said. After a noun, both Nのとおりに and the compound form Nどおりに are used (予定どおり, 説明どおり); the どおり form is very common in set phrases. It is neutral in register and appears in both instructions and everyday speech.

• 私が言うとおりに書いてください。

  わたしがいうとおりにかいてください。

  Please write exactly as I say.

• 先生に教えてもらったとおりに作ってみました。

  せんせいにおしえてもらったとおりにつくってみました。

  I tried making it exactly the way the teacher taught me.

• 会議は予定どおりに終わりました。

  かいぎはよていどおりにおわりました。

  The meeting finished exactly as scheduled.
