〜気味

Read ぎみ, this suffix says the speaker senses a slight, usually undesirable tendency in a state or condition — 風邪気味 (coming down with a cold), 疲れ気味 (a bit tired). It attaches to nouns of condition and to the ます-stem of verbs, and the whole thing behaves like a な-adjective or noun (気味の/気味だ). Unlike 〜っぽい, which describes an impression of resemblance, 〜気味 describes an incipient or mild degree of the speaker's own or someone's condition, and it is rarely used for clearly positive things.

• 今日は風邪気味なので、早く帰ります。

  きょうはかぜぎみなので、はやくかえります。

  I feel like I'm coming down with a cold today, so I'll go home early.

• 最近少し太り気味だから、運動を始めた。

  さいきんすこしふとりぎみだから、うんどうをはじめた。

  I've been putting on a bit of weight lately, so I started exercising.

• 電車が遅れ気味ですので、お急ぎください。

  でんしゃがおくれぎみですので、おいそぎください。

  The trains are running slightly behind, so please hurry.
