〜おかげで／〜せいで

Both give a cause, but おかげで expresses gratitude for a good result, while せいで blames something for a bad result. Because of this evaluation, they are not interchangeable with neutral から/ので. おかげで can be used ironically (雨のおかげでびしょ濡れだ), and both can end a sentence as 〜おかげだ／〜せいだ.

• 先生のおかげで合格できました。

  せんせいのおかげでごうかくできました。

  Thanks to you, sensei, I was able to pass.

• 事故のせいで、電車が一時間も遅れた。

  じこのせいで、でんしゃがいちじかんもおくれた。

  Because of the accident, the train was an hour late.

• 薬を飲んだおかげで、熱が下がりました。

  くすりをのんだおかげで、ねつがさがりました。

  Thanks to taking the medicine, my fever went down.
