〜つづける／〜はじめる／〜おわる／〜だす

These compound verbs mark the phase of an action. 〜はじめる is a neutral 'begin', while 〜だす implies the start was sudden or unexpected and is not used for your own planned actions or in requests (×走り出してください). 〜つづける means the action goes on without stopping, and 〜おわる means it is completed — note 〜おわる is used with actions that have a clear end (読み終わる), not with states.

  The child started reading a book.

• 彼は三時間も走り続けた。

  かれはさんじかんもはしりつづけた。

  He kept running for three whole hours.

• レポートを書き終わったとたん、雨が降り出した。

  レポートをかきおわったとたん、あめがふりだした。

  The moment I finished writing the report, it suddenly started to rain.
