〜きる／〜きれない

〜きる expresses doing something all the way to the end or to the limit (食べきる, 使いきる), and can also mean doing it with full conviction (言いきる). The potential 〜きれる／〜きれない says whether one can finish or endure it; 〜きれない is very common with quantities that are too large (食べきれない, 数えきれない). Note the difference from 〜おわる, which is neutral 'finish', whereas 〜きる stresses that nothing is left.

• この料理は多すぎて、食べきれません。

  このりょうりはおおすぎて、たべきれません。

  There's too much food here; I can't finish it.

  こんげつのおこづかいをつかいきってしまった。

  I've used up all of this month's allowance.

• 空には数えきれないほどの星が光っていた。

  そらにはかぞえきれないほどのほしがひかっていた。

  Countless stars were shining in the sky.
