〜っぱなし

Attached to the ます-stem, 〜っぱなし describes something left in a state it should not be left in (the door left open, the light left on), and this use carries criticism or regret. A second use expresses that one action continues nonstop (standing the whole way, losing every time). It behaves like a noun, so it takes だ/です or の before another noun: 出しっぱなしの本. Compare 〜たまま, which is neutral description; っぱなし usually implies carelessness or an unwanted continuation.

• 水を出しっぱなしにしないでください。

  みずをだしっぱなしにしないでください。

  Please don't leave the water running.

• electricity はともかく、エアコンをつけっぱなしで出かけてしまった。

  でんきはともかく、エアコンをつけっぱなしででかけてしまった。

  Never mind the lights — I went out leaving the air conditioner on.

• 電車が込んでいて、東京から大阪まで立ちっぱなしだった。

  でんしゃがこんでいて、とうきょうからおおさかまでたちっぱなしだった。

  The train was crowded, so I stood the whole way from Tokyo to Osaka.
