〜ずに

The written/formal equivalent of 〜ないで when it means "without doing X, (do Y)". It attaches to the ない-stem, and する becomes せずに, not しずに. 〜ずに appears in essays, notices and news; 〜ないで is preferred in everyday speech, and only 〜ないで (not 〜ずに) can be used for requests like 〜ないでください.

• 朝ご飯を食べずに学校へ行った。

  あさごはんをたべずにがっこうへいった。

  I went to school without eating breakfast.

• 何も言わずに部屋を出ていった。

  なにもいわずにへやをでていった。

  He left the room without saying anything.

• あきらめずに最後まで挑戦しようと思います。

  あきらめずにさいごまでちょうせんしようとおもいます。

  I intend to keep trying to the end without giving up.
