〜わけにはいかない

Expresses impossibility that comes from social obligation, common sense or circumstances — not from lack of ability (that would be 〜ことができない). With the negative verb, 〜ないわけにはいかない means 'must, have no choice but to do'. Used in both speech and writing; the polite form is 〜わけにはいきません.

• 明日は試験だから、今日休むわけにはいかない。

  あしたはしけんだから、きょうやすむわけにはいかない。

  Tomorrow is the exam, so I can't take today off.

• 車で来たので、お酒を飲むわけにはいきません。

  くるまできたので、おさけをのむわけにはいきません。

  I came by car, so I can't drink alcohol.

• 部長に頼まれた以上、やらないわけにはいかない。

  ぶちょうにたのまれたいじょう、やらないわけにはいかない。

  Since the manager asked me, I have no choice but to do it.
