〜てはじめて

Marks the point at which something is realized or becomes possible for the first time, usually through experience. The second clause very often expresses awareness: 〜が分かった, 〜に気づいた, 〜ができる. Do not use it for mere sequence of actions; it always carries the nuance "not until then", and the main clause is usually past tense or a general truth.

• 病気になってはじめて健康の大切さが分かった。

  びょうきになってはじめてけんこうのたいせつさがわかった。

  Only after falling ill did I understand the value of health.

• 親になってはじめて親の気持ちが分かりました。

  おやになってはじめておやのきもちがわかりました。

  It was only when I became a parent that I understood how parents feel.

• 外国で暮らしてはじめて、自分の国について何も知らなかったと気づいた。

  がいこくでくらしてはじめて、じぶんのくににについてなにもしらなかったときづいた。

  Only after living abroad did I notice I knew nothing about my own country.
