〜たところ

Connects an action to what was discovered or what happened as a result of doing it, typically something the speaker did not know beforehand. It belongs to formal speech and written reports (business mail, research write-ups) rather than casual conversation. The result clause is in past tense, and unlike 〜たら it is not used for hypotheses or for things the speaker planned to cause.

• 店に電話したところ、もう閉まっていた。

  みせにでんわしたところ、もうしまっていた。

  When I called the shop, it was already closed.

• 先生に相談したところ、いいアドバイスをいただいた。

  せんせいにそうだんしたところ、いいアドバイスをいただいた。

  When I consulted my teacher, I received good advice.

• 資料を確認したところ、数字に間違いが見つかりました。

  しりょうをかくにんしたところ、すうじにまちがいがみつかりました。

  Upon checking the documents, we found an error in the figures.
