〜ほど〜はない

A superlative expression: the speaker picks one thing as the most extreme of its kind, based on personal judgment or experience. It is often used with emotional evaluations (うれしい, つらい, 楽しい) and sounds emphatic but natural in both speech and writing. With a verb, the fixed shape 〜ほど〜ことはない is used; note that a separate pattern 〜ことはない meaning 'there's no need to' exists, so read the whole structure carefully.

• 母の料理ほどおいしいものはない。

  ははのりょうりほどおいしいものはない。

  Nothing tastes as good as my mother's cooking.

• 家族を失うことほどつらいことはない。

  かぞくをうしなうことほどつらいことはない。

  Nothing is more painful than losing your family.

• 日曜日に家でゆっくりするほど幸せなことはありません。

  にちようびにいえでゆっくりするほどしあわせなことはありません。

  There's nothing happier than relaxing at home on a Sunday.
