〜以外

Marks everything outside a named item. With 以外は the focus is on excluding it ('except for X'), while 以外に(も) adds something else ('besides X, also ...'). It is neutral in register and common in notices and written instructions as well as speech; 〜以外の + N modifies a noun. Compare 〜のほかに, which simply adds, whereas 以外 clearly draws a line around the excluded item.

• 日曜日以外は毎日働いています。

  にちようびいがいはまいにちはたらいています。

  I work every day except Sunday.

• 漢字以外に、敬語も難しいと思います。

  かんじいがいに、けいごもむずかしいとおもいます。

  Besides kanji, I think honorific language is difficult too.

• 関係者以外の方は中に入らないでください。

  かんけいしゃいがいのかたはなかにはいらないでください。

  Persons other than staff are asked not to enter.
