〜のではないか／〜んじゃない？

Softens an opinion or guess by presenting it as a question rather than a flat assertion, so it sounds modest and leaves room for the listener to disagree. 〜のではないか / 〜のではないだろうか is written and formal (essays, reports, polite discussion); 〜んじゃない？ with rising intonation is its casual spoken counterpart. Because it is indirect, it is also convenient for hinting at criticism or advice without sounding pushy.

  そのこたえはまちがっているんじゃない？

  Isn't that answer wrong?

• 明日は雨が降るんじゃないかと思って、傘を持ってきた。

  あしたはあめがふるんじゃないかとおもって、かさをもってきた。

  I thought it might rain tomorrow, so I brought an umbrella.

• 若者の読書時間は減っているのではないだろうか。

  わかもののどくしょじかんはへっているのではないだろうか。
