〜ように言う／〜ように頼む

This is the standard way to report a request, instruction or order without quoting the exact words. 〜ように言う is closer to telling or instructing, while 〜ように頼む is asking a favour; 〜ように伝える means to pass on a message. The person receiving the instruction is marked with に, and the negative form is V-ないように言う (tell someone not to do something).

• 母は弟に早く帰るように言いました。

  ははは おとうとに はやく かえるように いいました。

  My mother told my little brother to come home early.

• 友だちにノートを貸してくれるように頼んだ。

  ともだちに のーとを かしてくれるように たのんだ。

  I asked my friend to lend me his notebook.

• 医者に、しばらくお酒を飲まないように言われました。

  いしゃに、しばらく おさけを のまないように いわれました。

  The doctor told me not to drink alcohol for a while.
