〜ばかりだ（変化）

Attached to the dictionary form of change verbs (増える、減る、悪くなる、下がる…), it says a situation keeps moving in one direction, almost always an undesirable one. It is a written, somewhat formal expression often found in reports and newspapers, and 一方だ is a close synonym. Do not confuse it with V-たばかりだ (have just done) or 〜てばかりいる (do nothing but).

• 物価は上がるばかりだ。

  ぶっかは あがるばかりだ。

  Prices just keep going up.

• 手術のあと、父の体は弱くなるばかりです。

  しゅじゅつの あと、ちちの からだは よわく なるばかりです。

  Since the operation, my father's health has done nothing but decline.

• この村の人口は減るばかりで、若者の姿はほとんど見られない。

  この むらの じんこうは へるばかりで、わかものの すがたは ほとんど みられない。

  The village population keeps falling, and you hardly see any young people.
